BPi-R1 Open-Source router

Wednesday, August 27th, 2014

I was browsing and ran across a new product page – so fresh, that they did not even have a price listed!

Basically, they made a larger printed circuit board based on a Banana Pi, and added:

  • small gigabit switch (BCM53125)
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi

Now this will make a really interesting router for OpenWRT… dual core A20 and 1GB of ram makes for a very powerful router!

It looks like they preserved most of the connectors from the Banana Pi (except for one USB host port) and added a laptop-style SATA connector on top.

Note the RTL8192CU WiFi module (now we know where the second USB port went) and the two antenna connectors.

For more specifications on the BPi this router is based on, see my BPi review :)

An expandable, dual core router with 1GB… who would have thunk it?

I’ll have to buy a couple for my lab so I can try them out, they may replace my Linksys WRT54G routers…

I added a version 0.81a of RoboPiLib compiled under the latest Raspbian to the RoboPi page after receiving a report of linking issues with the previously uploaded version (that I generated on an old version of Raspbian).

I am currently working on the next revision of RoboPiLib, and I have started working on a Python library for RoboPi as well. The Python RoboPi API will be as close as possible to the C and Spin versions.
