VGA for the RPi Model B+

In case you have not seen it, there is a new B+ add-on design by Gert, the designer of the Gertboard, GertDuino and many other excellent boards. The blog post about it is at:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/gert-vga-adapter/

The bad news is that it chews up the I2C, serial and SPI pins.

The good news is it should drive pretty much any VGA monitor, and it looks like the B+ can also drive parallel LCD’s!

In an extremely generous move, Gert released the files for his 18 bit VGA pcb as freeware. See the github for details:

The timing is fortuitous, as I am in the process of ordering more RoboPi and other boards, so I plan to make about 10 VGA boards for my uses (I have 7 B+’s so far). I could easily have many more made, however I won’t know the costs until I know how many I’ll need to make.  (more about the boards in the thread I started on the Raspberry Pi forum for it https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=86658)

I decided to hand-wire a prototype so I can start playing with it ASAP 🙂

I still have to add a few wires, and a VGA socket, however I managed to get the board to do most of my wiring for me 🙂

I am using the long busses for R G B, but I will need to add some jumper wires.

I hope to add the jumpers & VGA connector tomorrow, and get it all running by Monday.

Stay tuned for updates!
